Artist Statement:

Underdog offers a glimpse into the reality South Asian women face growing up in a traditional brown home. The painting aims to express the difference in how sons and daughters are treated by parents based on Eastern family values. Too often, females are raised within an immigrant family system that acts as a barrier to overcome because of the pressure to behave a certain way. There is a constant feeling that any action will have ripple effects within the community.

To push the narrative further, the artist draws a connection with the story of David and Goliath by including the bust of Michelangelo’s David. He evokes the warrior's spirit within the subject as someone capable of overcoming the challenge presented to them—the quiet confidence as the subject closes their eyes holding the slingshot ready to defeat her enemy.

Visually, the dominating red, contrasted with the dark blues and strong use of line provides the viewer with a balanced composition to enjoy. One can observe the use of the traditional dupatta to incorporate south asian culture, while the bandages are an ode to the warrior ancestry and the shoes bring the entire piece to a contemporary forefront.
